The seventy-six major sins compiled by Imam Muhammad bin Ahmad bin `Uthman bin Qaymaz at Turkamani, Shams al-Din al-Dimashqi ad-Dhahabi (rahm) (673-748 AH) in his book “al kaba-ir” are:
Associating partners with Allah (swt) - Shirk. (Quran, 4:116)
Making false oath. (Quran, 3:77; Sahih al-Bukhari, 2666)
Being a perpetual liar. (Quran, 3:61)
Committing suicide. (Quran, 4:29)
Ruling by laws other than the laws of Islam/ Judging unjustly. (Quran, 5:44)
Being a dayyouth (one who approves the indecency of his womenfolk and who is void of jealousy or the pimp who facilitates indecency between two people). (Quran, 24:33; Sahih al-Bukhari, 5761)
Women imitating men and vice-versa. (Sunan Abi Dawud, 4097)
Marrying for the purpose of making a woman allowable for another. (al-Sunan al-Kubrá lil-Bayhaqī, 14189)
Eating carrion, blood or pork meat. (Quran, 6:145)
Not keeping clean from the droplets of urine. (Sahih al-Bukhari, 216)
Acquiring sacred knowledge only for worldly gains or concealing knowledge. (Quran, 2:159)
Reminding people of one’s kindness. (Quran, 2:264)
Denying predestination. (Quran, 54:49)
Eavesdropping (on other’s private conversations). (Quran, 49:12)
Cursing others. (Quran, 4:148)
Treachery. (Sahih al-Bukhari, 6178)
Believing in what soothsayers and astrologers say. (Quran, 72:26)
A wife being rebellious to her husband. (Quran, 4:34)
Cutting off the ties of relationships. (Quran, 4:1)
Putting pictures of beings with souls on clothing, curtains, rocks and any other items. (Sahih al-Bukhari, 5951)
Spreading harmful tales. (Quran, 68:11)
Striking one’s self, wailing, tearing one’s clothing, pulling one’s hair & similar deeds as a form of mourning/at times of calamity. (Sahih al-Bukhari, 1294)
Slander or malign someone’s genealogy. (Sahih al-Bukhari, 3850)
Committing oppression and rebel upon earth without right. (Quran, 42:42)
Labelling Muslims as disbelievers (takfir) and Khawarijis.(Sunan Ibn Majah, 173)
Hurting or Reviling Muslims. (Quran, 33:58)
Harming the slaves of Allah. (Quran, 33:58)
Wearing one’s lower garment and clothes too long, i.e; below the ankles. (Sunan Abi Dawood, 4093)
Men wearing silk & gold. (Mishkat al-Masabih, 4406)
Running away of a slave. (Riyad as-Salihin, 1769)
Sacrificing animals for other than Allah (swt). (Quran, 6:121; Quran, 6:162-163)
One who crosses boundaries of the land. (Sahih Muslim, 1978c)
Abusing or reviling anyone of the Companions (rah) of the Prophet (pbuh). (Sahih Muslim, 2540)
Abusing or reviling Ansaar (rah). (Sahih al-Bukhari, 3784)
Calling or inviting towards wrongdoing/sin. (Sahih Muslim, 2674)
Artificially lengthening the hair and tattooing. (Sahih al-Bukhari, 5933)
Taking up arms against one’s brother in Islam. (Sahih Muslim, 2616a)
Claiming that somebody is one’s father while the claimant knows it is not true. (Sahih al-Bukhari, 3509)
Believing in evil omen. (Sunan Abi Dawud, 3910)
Drinking in gold and silver utensils. (Sahih Muslim, 2065a; Al-Bayhaqi, 458)
Arguing or quarrelling for show & not seeking the truth. (Quran, 2:204-205; Shu’ab ul-Iman, 8076)
Being overbearing or taking advantage of the weak, slaves, wives or animals. (Quran, 4:36)
Not measuring the weights properly. (Quran, 83:1-3)
Thinking that one is safe from Allah’s (swt) planning. (Quran, 7:99)
Despairing of the mercy of Allah (swt) and losing hope. (Quran, 12:87)
Being thankless to Allah (swt) and people. (Jami’ at-Tirmidhi, 1954)
Withholding excess water from others. (Sahih al-Bukhari, 2354)
Branding/imprinting on the face of animals. (Sunan Abi Dawud, 2564)
Gambling. (Quran, 5:90)
Committing evil actions in the Haram. (Quran, 22:25)
Not performing the Friday prayers and congregational prayers without any valid excuse. (Quran, 62:9)
Spying on the Muslims & pointing out their secrets/weaknesses. (Quran, 49:12)

2) Scholars differ regarding some of the sins being major or minor, in any case one should avoid all above mentioned sins to the best of one’s ability.]
